The skilled worker applications (federal) are evaluated based on the applicant's ability to settle in Canada and contribute to its economy.
Since 1 January 2015, applications under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (federal) are processed through the immigrant selection system for Canada Express Entry . Eligible applicants under the category of federal skilled workers must first make a declaration of interest in immigrating to Canada in creating an online express entry profile.
To qualify for immigration to Canada and get your visa for permanent residence under the category of federal skilled workers, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must have accumulated at least one continuous year of work in paid full-time or equivalent paid during the last 10 years in a specialized profession (level 0, A or B in the National Occupational Classification) or
- You must qualify for arranged employment with an impact study on the positive labor market and with a permanent job offer from a Canadian employer; or
- You must have completed a PhD in Canada, or have completed at least two years of study for a doctoral program in a recognized institution in Canada.
- In addition, all applicants must have a minimum level on language skills in one of Canada's two official languages, English or French.
Applicants under the category of federal skilled workers have a total of 67 points based on the selection criteria established by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Note that items recognized by the skilled worker selection system may not reflect the chances of success to settle in Canada . Therefore, Citizenship and Immigration Canada officers are allowed to use an alternative method of assessing an application . The concept of " alternative assessment" enables an immigration officer to conduct its own assessment as to the applicant's ability to successfully establish in Canada. This method allows the immigration officer to accept or refuse an application regardless of the number of points obtained .
